Projects > Te Whare Hononga

Te Whare Hononga, located in New Plymouth, is a visitor centre and exhibition space designed to foster reconciliation and cultural storytelling. Te Whare Hononga is not just a building—it’s a symbol of unity, designed to reflect the historical and cultural narratives of Ngāti Te Whiti hapū and their connection to St Mary’s Church. The building services ensure that the space remains functional, comfortable, and sustainable for future generations. As part of the project, the existing Vicarage was relocated on site, meticulously refurbished to maintain to historic design while upgraded with new services and infrastructure to suit the proposed new use as a multi-purpose function centre. From a building services perspective, the project integrates modern infrastructure while respecting traditional Māori architectural principles.

Key Building Services Considerations

HVAC & Thermal Comfort

The structure employs passive design strategies to optimize natural ventilation and thermal efficiency. Mechanical heating and cooling systems are designed to complement the timber diagrid structure, ensuring energy efficiency.

Lighting & Electrical Systems

A mix of natural and artificial lighting enhances the exhibition spaces, with LED fixtures reducing energy consumption. Smart lighting controls allow for adaptable illumination based on visitor flow and exhibit requirements.

Water & Plumbing

Sustainable water and wastewater management includes low-flow fixtures and in-ground grease trap to minimize environmental impact. The plumbing system supports both public amenities and commercial kitchen requirements.

Sustainability & Energy Efficiency

Reducing the overall carbon footprint of the project by retaining the existing structure of the Vicarages and reusing existing materials where possible. The project prioritizes low-carbon materials and energy-efficient systems to align with environmental goals.
